  • There is an exaggerated or inflated sense of self-importance
  • Have a Strong sense of entitlement and require constant and excessive admiration
  • Have expectation to be recognized as superior even if such persons don’t have achievements that warrant it
  • Have an exaggeration of their achievements and talents.
  • They are preoccupied with various fantasies like imaginations of success, brilliance, power,  beauty or to have perfect mate
  • Such people consider themselves as superior and thought that they can only be associated with equally special or superior people.
  • They try to dominate conversations and perceive others as inferior
  • Seek special favors and unconditional compliance with their expectations
  • Take try to manipulate others for what they want.
  • They don’t care about needs and feelings of others
  • Have an envious attitude and also believe others envy them
  • Such person behaves very arrogantly or haughtily and also meet others people as conceited, boastful and showy.

On the other hand people with narcissistic personality disorder are very poor to handle anything that they perceive as criticism, or ignoring their self-worth so they can:

  • Become impatient, annoyed and angry when they don't receive special attention.
  • May face severe interpersonal problems and can easily feel upset
  • In order to make themselves appear superior they may act in rage or contempt way and try to depreciate the other person
  • Face difficulty in regulating emotions and feelings.
  • In case of avoidance face major problem of dealing with stress.
  • Feel depressed and moody because they think that they are not perfect in every sense.
  • May have hidden feelings of insecurity, vulnerability, shame, and humiliation.

Causes 

Exact cause that causes narcissistic personality disorder is unknown. But it is thought that Environment, Genetics and Neurobiology can effect in complex manner to cause the disorder. Genetically vulnerable children and parenting styles that are overprotective or neglectful may lead to develop narcissistic personality disorder.

When to seek treatment 

People with narcissistic personality disorder don’t seek any Psychiatrist or Clinical Psychologist help for themselves as they don’t think that have any psychological issue.

They might seek treatment for symptoms of depression, drug or alcohol use, or another mental health problem. But while on treatment they may perceive insults to self-esteem that make it difficult to accept and follow through with treatment. So recognizing the severity, help provided by a friend or family might be helpful in treatment plan.

Risk Factors

Narcissistic personality disorder begins in the teens or early adulthood and males are more effected than females. For the children it be typical of their age to show some traits of narcissism and doesn't mean they'll go on to develop narcissistic personality disorder.

Treatment Options

Treatment of choice in case of narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is long-term, consistent outpatient care. Usually combined approach of this usually combined approach of psychotherapy and medication management is followed.

The prime treatment is individual psychotherapy especially psychoanalytic psychotherapy but treatment option may also be used like family and couples therapy, objective-focused psychotherapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) 

Complications

Complications associated with narcissistic personality disorder may include.

  • Difficulty in maintaining relationships.
  • Problems to fit in educational setting.
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Physical health issues
  • Misuse of drug or alcohol
  • Suicidal tendencies in extreme anxiety and Narcissistic behavior.

Prevention

There's no authentic way to prevent narcissistic personality disorder as we don’t know the exact cause of this disorder. However, certain factor may prove helpful like.

  • Initiate the treatment as early as possible to address childhood mental health issues.
  • Family therapy is recommended to learn how to better communicate with others or to cope with emotional distress or any types of conflicts.
  • Seek guidance from expert Psychiatrist, Psychologist or therapists if needed.
